In this guide we cover three sports car routes in and around Batumi, show where you can drive fast without risking fines, and list the speeding fines in force since July 2026, so the rental doesn't turn into unplanned expenses.
The coastal route: Gonio, Kvariati, Sarpi
South of the city, right past the airport, begins the best coastal stretch in Adjara: a smooth road with fast, flowing curves — the sea on the right, green hills on the left. Along the way are the village of Gonio, where the Roman fortress of Apsaros still stands, and Kvariati, known for its beaches. The road ends at the Sarpi border crossing: that is the turnaround point of the route — you reach the Turkish border, turn around and drive back.

So the out-and-back drive easily stretches into half a day: you can swim at Kvariati, visit the Apsaros fortress in Gonio, or have lunch by the sea in Sarpi.
The serpentine: up the valley to Khulo
The second route is a road most travelers have never even heard of. The Transadjarian highway starts in Batumi and climbs into the mountains along the Acharistskali river: about 75 kilometers to the town of Khulo, through Keda and Shuakhevi. The road is paved the whole way, and the corners follow one another almost without pause — there are barely any straight sections here.
You could stop here almost every ten minutes. About thirty kilometers from Batumi are the Makhuntseti waterfall and the 12th-century stone arch bridge of Queen Tamar — they stand a hundred meters apart. Further along the road there are several more medieval arch bridges. The best known of them is Dandalo. There will be smaller waterfalls on the way too, and in Keda you can stop at a local winery. The final point is the town of Khulo. From here a cable car runs to the mountain village of Tago: the cable is stretched across the gorge in a single 1,720-meter span, with no supports along the way — the second-longest crossing of its kind in Europe. Locals use it as public transport, and for a traveler it is a ten-minute ride with views over Upper Adjara. Out and back with stops, this is a route for a full day.
The only rule: at Khulo it is time for the sports car to turn around. Beyond it the road leads over the Goderdzi Pass toward Akhaltsikhe, and 12–13 kilometers below the pass are still unpaved — as described by a driver who crossed the pass in June 2025. That stretch calls for a different car — an SUV like the Mercedes-AMG G63 or Defender.
An evening drive along the sea
The third route is urban — there is no need to leave Batumi: it runs along the sea, next to the city's main promenade area. Batumi Boulevard is a place for walking, seven kilometers of parkland along the shore. But parallel to it runs a road under the palms — one worth driving unhurried.
From the road you can see Batumi's main landmarks: the 130-meter Alphabet Tower, built in the shape of a DNA helix with the letters of the Georgian alphabet, the Ferris wheel by the water, the musical fountain with its light show, and the Ali and Nino statue — steel figures of two lovers that slowly move toward each other and merge into one for a few moments. You can park at any point and continue the walk on foot.
The best fit for this route is a convertible: with the roof down, the evening city feels completely different. A good option is the BMW 850i Convertible from $200 per day: it has power to spare for any road, yet it is just as good at an unhurried city pace.
Mornings out of town, evenings in the city
In season, from July to September, Batumi spends most of the day in traffic: the jams begin right at the entrance to the city, and the center stays busy until late evening. Tourists and locals warn newcomers about it: "its mostly good just be prepared for the traffic in batumi when u get in the tunnel," writes a local on r/Sakartvelo.
So for the out-of-town routes the best time is early morning, six to nine: the roads are still free. By around ten the coastal highway is already crowded: beachgoers, minibuses and fruit trucks. The evening drive along the sea, on the contrary, is best saved for the late hours: after dark the lights come on and there are fewer cars on the seaside road.
Cameras, limits and fines: what should you know?
Since July 1, 2026, speeding fines in Georgia follow this scale (per OG Drive's current overview):

Cameras on the main roads and in the cities work around the clock, and the fine arrives by SMS to the car's owner. If the car is rented, the notice first goes to the rental company, and then to you. Paying within 10 days earns a 20 percent discount. Blocking traffic and dangerous stunts are a separate matter: a 1,000 GEL fine plus a one-year driving ban.
Hiding cameras is not the custom in Georgia — a warning sign stands before each one. "There's no road toll. There are, however, loads and loads of speed cameras," shares u/Slobberinho after driving the Tbilisi–Batumi highway.
For an attentive driver this is, if anything, good news: the limits are posted, the cameras are visible in advance, and with calm driving you may not collect a single fine.

Can a sports car make it to the Goderdzi Pass? Unlikely. The asphalt ends past Khulo — beyond that lie 12–13 kilometers of dirt road. Better to turn the sports car around in Khulo and take an SUV for the pass.
