The black stripe across the back of this Charger reads DAYTONA, and the front fenders carry the number 392. Dodge took the Daytona name from a 1969 race car with a wing above the trunk. The number 392 is the engine's displacement in cubic inches, which is 6.4 litres.

In 2020 Dodge sold the Daytona 392 as an equipment package for the Charger Scat Pack. In this article we look at where the name comes from, what the Daytona package included and how the car drives according to journalists and owners. We also cover its fuel consumption, the weak points of the 6.4 engine and how many of these Chargers there are in Georgia today.

Where the Daytona name comes from

In the late 1960s, drivers in Dodge and Ford cars fought for wins in NASCAR, the American series raced in cars that look like production models. On oval tracks aerodynamics mattered a great deal, and in 1969 Dodge prepared a special racing version of the Charger. It had a long pointed nose and a wing about 58 cm (23 in) tall above the trunk lid. The car was named Charger Daytona after the track in Florida. To make it eligible for racing, NASCAR rules required at least 500 cars to be sold to ordinary buyers. Dodge gives the figure as 501; other sources say 503 or 505.

The Charger Daytona's first race was held on 14 September 1969 at the new track in Talladega, Alabama. In practice the tyres could not cope with the speed and came apart. Drivers from the PDA, the drivers' union led by Richard Petty, asked for the race to be postponed. NASCAR president Bill France refused, and most of them left the track. To make sure the race went ahead, France let in drivers from the slower preliminary race. Richard Brickhouse was the only union member who stayed, and he won the race in the No. 99 Charger Daytona. It was his only win in NASCAR's top series.

On 24 March 1970, on the same track, Buddy Baker drove a Charger Daytona around a lap at an average of 200.447 mph, or 322.6 km/h. No car had lapped a closed course faster than 200 mph before. The car itself, factory number DC-93, is now on display at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte. The winged cars did not race for long: for the 1971 season NASCAR's organisers limited the engine size of winged cars to 305 cubic inches, or 5 litres.

The Daytona name returned to the Dodge catalogue 37 years later. Limited Charger Daytona series were built in 2006–2009 and in 2013, and from 2017 to 2020 the Daytona was in the catalogue every year.

What the 2020 Charger Daytona 392 includes

In 2020 Dodge sold three versions of the Charger with the Daytona name. The Charger R/T with the Daytona package had a 5.7-litre engine rated at 370 hp. The Charger Scat Pack with the same package had a 6.4-litre engine rated at 485 hp, and this version is the one called the Daytona 392. The third version, the SRT Hellcat Widebody Daytona 50th Anniversary with a 717 hp supercharged engine, was limited to 501 cars to mark fifty years since the first Daytona.

The Daytona package does not change the Scat Pack's power output. According to Dodge's equipment list, the package includes:

  • 20-inch forged wheels with 275/40 R20 all-season tyres;
  • Brembo front brakes with six-piston calipers and 390 mm discs;
  • a Mopar cold air intake;
  • leather and Alcantara seats with Daytona lettering, heating and memory;
  • a black spoiler on the trunk lid, Daytona decals on the hood, roof and trunk, and 392 decals on the front fenders;
  • blind-spot monitoring and a power-adjustable steering column.

The package cost $3,495. In April 2020, when orders opened, the Charger Daytona 392 cost $43,490 in the US, excluding destination charges.

The Go Mango colour of the car in the photo is part of the model's history too. The orange "Go ManGo!" was in Dodge's catalogue in the early 1970s, and in 2006 it returned for the limited Charger Daytona R/T series. In 2020 Go Mango was one of twelve Charger colours.

How the Charger Daytona 392 drives

The Charger's 6.4-litre engine is naturally aspirated, with no turbocharger or supercharger. It has a single camshaft in the block, and the valves are operated by pushrods. The gearbox is an eight-speed automatic, and the car is rear-wheel drive only. The table lists the main figures from Dodge's specifications, with acceleration and braking results from Car and Driver's test of a 2020 Charger Scat Pack with the same engine.

Figure Value
Displacement 6,417 cc
Power 485 hp at 6,100 rpm
Torque 644 Nm (475 lb-ft) at 4,100 rpm
Weight 1,983 kg
Length 5,100 mm
0–97 km/h (0–60 mph) 3.9 s
0–161 km/h (0–100 mph) 9.1 s
Braking from 113 km/h (70 mph) 45.7 m
Top speed 282 km/h

Car and Driver's journalists compared the Charger Scat Pack with the Kia Stinger GT. This is what they wrote about the engine's sound:

The Hemi V-8 makes a stir everywhere it goes, with a distinctive roar that turns heads and a loud exhaust that has a way of disturbing the peace.

Car and Driver

Andrey Gaponov of JEEP4X4CLUB, a Moscow company that imports American cars, showed a 2023 Charger Scat Pack with the same engine on YouTube before handing it over to a client:

Просто мощный сочный звук мотора, звук выхлопа. Соседи по парковке, да и ваши соседи во дворе, на стоянке точно поймут, что у вас очень непростой автомобиль.

Just a powerful, rich engine and exhaust sound. Your neighbours in the car park and in the yard will know for sure that you have a very special car.

JEEP4X4CLUB, YouTube

The host of the Russian YouTube channel «ТАК ЗАВЕДЕНО» drove a 2021 Charger Scat Pack. He found the sound tiring over a whole motorway trip, even with the exhaust valves closed:

Вот этот звук, который тебя сопровождает всю поездку, это закрытые клапаны выхлопа, это тихий выхлоп по меркам Чарджера. Я очень сильно устану от этого звука.

This sound that follows you the whole trip is with the exhaust valves closed, the quiet exhaust by Charger standards. I would get very tired of this sound.

«ТАК ЗАВЕДЕНО», YouTube

In town the car is hard to drive smoothly. Car and Driver says the throttle works like an on-off switch, so it is hard to add power gently. The host of an Edmunds review has the same complaint about parking:

The only thing I wish is that the throttle wasn't so jumpy. This thing, it's hard to parallel park this car because the throttle is just a hair trigger.

Edmunds, YouTube

The Daytona 392's suspension is firm and not adjustable. Kyle Cheromcha of The Drive tested a 2018 Daytona 392 and wrote that the car feels unsettled when driven fast on bad tarmac:

The non-adjustable Bilstein suspension on the Daytona 392 makes for a bumpy ride over bad pavement, which verges on sketchy at higher speeds.

The Drive

The host of «ТАК ЗАВЕДЕНО» put it more briefly:

Такое ощущение, что на этой машине надо ездить по стеклу, тогда будет комфортно.

It feels like you need to drive this car on glass for it to be comfortable.

«ТАК ЗАВЕДЕНО», YouTube

Giorgi Sarishvili, host of the Georgian YouTube show «უხეში ტესტდრაივი», drove a Charger SRT 392 with the same 6.4 engine around Georgia. He noted the size of the car and how quiet the cabin is:

მანქანა საკმაოდ დიდია… ნამდვილი ამერიკული ტანკივით არის… სასიამოვნო სატარებელია, ანუ ჩუმიც არის, გარედან ხმა არ შემოდის.

The car is quite big… like a real American tank… It is pleasant to drive and quiet, no outside noise gets into the cabin.

«უხეში ტესტდრაივი», YouTube

Rear-wheel drive in rain and winter

All of the engine's torque goes to the rear wheels, and on a wet road the rear axle easily breaks loose. The host of «ТАК ЗАВЕДЕНО» talks about it with pleasure:

Норовит машина, да, сорвать заднюю ось постоянно. И в этом есть свой кайф.

Yes, the car keeps trying to break the rear axle loose. And there is a thrill in that.

«ТАК ЗАВЕДЕНО», YouTube

A Reddit user who owns a 2020 Charger Scat Pack in Florida writes that the car is fine in the rain:

The car is just fine in the rain as long as you're careful and know how to handle slick roads.

Reddit user, owner of a 2020 Charger Scat Pack

Snow is harder. A Reddit user who owns a Daytona 392 in Toronto drives it in winter too, but fits winter tyres and leaves the car at home on days with heavy snow. He advises care when stopping on hills and staying out of deep frozen ruts, because the Charger's ground clearance is low. A Reddit user who owns a Charger Scat Pack in New Jersey does not drive it in snow at all:

It just gets loose very quickly and suddenly, no matter how good a driver you are.

Interior and trunk

The Charger is a four-door sedan more than five metres long. Roman Makarov reviewed a 2019 Charger Scat Pack on YouTube. This is how he describes the rear seat:

Я вам скажу, что сзади сидеть достаточно удобно. Место тут, конечно, не как в S-классе, но и нормально. Конечно, у меня колени упираются, ростом 1,93 м. По высоте над головой запас пространства огромный.

I'll tell you, sitting in the back is quite comfortable. Of course there isn't as much room as in an S-Class, but it's fine. My knees do touch, I'm 1.93 m tall. There's a huge amount of headroom.

Roman Makarov, YouTube

For an Edmunds review, a 2018 Daytona 392 was driven about 800 km (almost 500 miles) by two people with their dogs. The host of the review praised the rear legroom:

I have this seat as far back as it'll go, so far back that I can't even reach the pedals if I was sitting in it, and I still have leg room. There is no reason you'd be uncomfortable in a long road trip in this car.

Edmunds, YouTube

Journalists are critical of the cabin. Car and Driver writes that it feels cramped, although the rear seats are comfortable. Kyle Cheromcha of The Drive called the front seats oddly hard and uncomfortable for their size.

Dodge gives the trunk volume as 467 litres (16.5 cu ft). Car and Driver calls it big for a sedan.

How much fuel the Charger 392 uses

The Charger 392 is designed for 91-octane fuel on the US scale, which corresponds to 95 RON. According to EPA data, from the US Environmental Protection Agency, the car uses 15.7 litres per 100 km in town (15 mpg) and 9.8 litres on the highway (24 mpg). Under light load on the highway, four of the eight cylinders are switched off. The tank holds 70 litres.

The table collects measurements by journalists and owners. Miles per gallon have been converted to litres per 100 km.

Who measured Conditions Consumption, l/100 km
EPA town 15.7
EPA highway 9.8
Car and Driver whole test 13.8
Car and Driver highway, 121 km/h 9.4
Roman Makarov everyday driving 16.8–18.1
«ТАК ЗАВЕДЕНО» highway 10–11
«Погнали» channel highway, from Russia through Georgia to Turkey 11.5–12.5

Roman Makarov warns that this car will not save you money on fuel:

Но эта машина вообще не для экономии топлива. Чтобы вы понимали, расход здесь 14–13 миль на галлон. Это очень мало, и с собой надо просто возить цистерны.

But this car is not about saving fuel at all. Just so you understand, consumption here is 14–13 miles per gallon. That's very little, and you basically need to carry tankers with you.

Roman Makarov, YouTube

In 2024 the authors of the «Погнали» channel drove a 2022 Charger with the 6.4 engine through Upper Lars, Stepantsminda and Batumi to Turkey. This was their consumption on the highway:

Расход у нас средний 11,5–12,5 литров на 100 километров, это по трассе.

Our average consumption is 11.5–12.5 litres per 100 kilometres, that's on the highway.

Reliability of the 6.4 engine and recalls

The 6.4 engine has a known weak point: the camshaft lobes and the lifter rollers wear. The manufacturer described the problem in a 2021 technical bulletin. If a mechanic finds metal debris in the screen of the variable valve timing control valve, the bulletin says the whole engine must be replaced. A Reddit user who owns a 2015 Charger Scat Pack writes that he changed the oil on time, but the lifters still failed at about 97,000 km:

I took really good care of it and hit all the oil changes at 60k miles. The lifters still failed on me.

Reddit user, owner of a 2015 Charger Scat Pack

Other owners have had no engine repairs. Johnny, author of the JohnnyGT YouTube channel, covered about 274,000 km in a 2015 Charger Scat Pack:

I think the fact that I'm 170,000 miles, and I'm still in my original motor and original transmission, those two items alone, I think is an indication of how reliable the car has been.

JohnnyGT, YouTube

Johnny also warns that maintenance is expensive because of the Brembo brakes: the discs and pads for them cost more than ordinary ones.

A Reddit user who owns a 2016 Charger Scat Pack writes that over 143,000 miles, about 230,000 km, apart from scheduled maintenance he only had to replace a differential seal and the headlight fuses.

When a factory defect is found in cars of one model, the manufacturer fixes it free of charge at a dealer. In the US this is called a recall, and the list of recalls is kept by NHTSA, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The 2020 Charger has two recalls, and neither of them concerns the engine.

The first recall concerns the windscreen. It may not have been bonded properly at the factory and could come out in a crash, so the dealer bonds it again. The second concerns the side curtain airbags of 2018–2021 Chargers: the inflator that fills them may rupture. The inflators are replaced together with the airbags. Whether this work has been done on a particular car can be checked by VIN on the NHTSA website.

What happened to the Charger after 2023

This generation of the Charger was sold from 2011 and built at the plant in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. In 2023 Dodge built the last special editions. One of them, the 807 hp King Daytona, was also painted Go Mango, and 300 were made. The last V8 Charger, a grey Scat Pack Widebody, was built on 22 December 2023.

Dodge kept the Daytona name for the new-generation Charger. On 5 March 2024 Dodge revealed the electric Charger Daytona: the Scat Pack version has 670 hp and all-wheel drive. A sound similar to a V8 is produced by the Fratzonic system. The petrol Chargers of the new generation are called Sixpack and have a 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six Hurricane engine rated at 420 or 550 hp.

The V8 may come back. On 21 May 2026, at Stellantis's investor day, CEO Antonio Filosa promised to bring back the HEMI V8, but did not say in which model. In October 2026 Automotive News, citing a supplier planning document, reported that at the end of 2027 Dodge will start building a new Charger with a 6.2-litre supercharged V8, about 12,000 cars a year. Stellantis called the information speculation.

The Charger in Georgia: how many there are and what importing one costs

At the start of his review, Giorgi Sarishvili says that the Charger with the 6.4 engine is rare in Georgia:

ზუსტად ქართულ რეალობაში ეს ავტომობილი ძალიან ცოტა გვხვდება საქართველოში. ცოტა რაოდენობით არის შემოყვანილი.

In Georgian conditions this car is very rare. Only a few have been imported.

«უხეში ტესტდრაივი», YouTube

Few are for sale, too. On 21 October 2026 there were 712 Dodge Charger listings on myauto.ge, but almost all of them were US auction lots listed by importers. Only 23 cars were in Georgia itself, and 8 more were on the way. The table splits the listings by engine size and by where the car is.

Engine All listings Cars in Georgia At US auctions On the way

5.7 l V8 (R/T) 6 4 1 1
6.4 l V8 (Scat Pack, Daytona 392) 8 3 4 1
6.2 l supercharged V8 (Hellcat) 2 — 2 —

Of the three cars with the 6.4 engine for sale in Georgia, a 2017 car in Kutaisi was priced at $23,500, a 2019 car in Batumi at $30,000 and a 2022 Scat Pack Widebody in Tbilisi at $35,000. None of them was a Daytona 392.

According to the National Statistics Office of Georgia, at the end of 2025 at least 214 Chargers of all versions were registered in the country. In 2025, 36 of them were registered for the first time. Geostat's data does not include engine size, so it is not known how many have the 6.4 engine. How cars from the US reach Georgia is covered in our article on the Rustavi car market.

Excise duty is paid when a car is imported into Georgia. Under Article 188 of the Tax Code, as in force since 2 April 2026, the rate is multiplied by the engine size in cubic centimetres. For a car up to six years old the rate is 1.5 lari per cc, for a car older than six years it is 4.5 lari. The age is the difference between the year of customs clearance and the year of manufacture.

A 2020 Charger Daytona 392 cleared in 2026 counts as six years old. The excise is 6,417 × 1.5 = 9,625.5 lari. In 2027 the same car will be seven, and the excise will triple to 28,876.5 lari. For comparison, a 2020 Charger with the 3.6-litre engine pays about 5,400 lari in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Charger Daytona 392 and the Charger Scat Pack? They have the same engine: 6.4 litres, 485 hp. From 2020 the Daytona 392 is a Scat Pack with the Daytona package. The package adds 20-inch forged wheels, Brembo brakes with six-piston calipers, a Mopar intake, leather and Alcantara seats, a spoiler and Daytona decals.

How much horsepower does the Dodge Charger Daytona 392 have? 485 hp at 6,100 rpm, with 644 Nm of torque. In Car and Driver's test it reached 97 km/h (60 mph) in 3.9 seconds.
